Case story - Training Module For Sports Governing Body

Project

Learning objects to train users of the UEFA Information Management System, FAME (Football Administration and Management Environment), which unites all business processes and data used to manage competitions and events.

Challenge

How do you choose an instructional strategy for maximum efficacy and flexibility? In this case for instance, the learning objects had to be usable in multiple ways, as a SCORM compliant course, in different modules, independently so that they could be used in classroom training, or even summoned from a Help section or delivered as a CD-ROM.

Solution

For UEFA’s Information Management System, we recommended a ‘Show Me’ followed by ‘Test Me’ learning strategy based on experience teaching people to operate software applications. The initial ‘Show Me’ section was simply a self-running demonstration of how to use FAME. This was then backed up by the ‘Test Me’ section, where users worked on an interface that simulated the experience of actually using FAME. To preserve flexibility, learning objects were also designed to allow a non-linear path through the course. Users could therefore choose the module specific to their needs and jump straight into the training for that particular module, which was particularly useful for repeat users returning to the course with a specific query. We also included a short overview of FAME at the start to persuade users of its utility to them before they began.

As with other projects, this too was conducted on an end-to-end basis, from initial consulting all the way to final delivery of the learning objects themselves.
